Our History
Building Community. Preserving Heritage. Empowering Neighbors.
For more than three decades, Vecinos Unidos has been a driving force for community empowerment, neighborhood preservation, and resident-led advocacy in West Dallas. Founded on the belief that strong communities are built by engaged neighbors, Vecinos Unidos continues to honor the rich history, culture, and resilience of West Dallas while working to ensure that future generations can thrive in the neighborhoods they call home.
Our Story
Vecinos Unidos, Inc. (United Neighbors) was founded in March 1992 by Rosa Lopez, a visionary affordable housing advocate and grassroots community leader. Rosa recognized that homeownership was more than owning property—it was a pathway to stability, opportunity, and generational wealth for families in West Dallas.
Driven by this vision, Vecinos Unidos worked to create opportunities for families to invest in their future. In 1995, under Rosa's leadership, the organization developed Casa Rio, a planned community of 57 brick homes in the Los Altos neighborhood. Beyond building homes, Vecinos Unidos equipped new homeowners with education and resources to help them maintain their properties and achieve long-term success as homeowners.
Rosa's impact extended far beyond housing. She cultivated local leadership, empowered residents to advocate for their neighborhoods, and united 14 West Dallas pocket neighborhoods into a coalition known as West Dallas 1. Her leadership helped strengthen community voices and laid the foundation for resident-driven planning and neighborhood preservation efforts that continue today.
As West Dallas experienced rapid growth and development, Rosa and other community leaders championed policies designed to protect long-time residents from displacement. Their efforts helped establish neighborhood stabilization measures and preserve the character and identity of historic communities such as La Bajada.
Our Mission
